Bone Mineral Densitometry

Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD) scans are available to medicare eligible patients and DVA patients.

Also known as Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) a BMD scan is a non invasive imaging test which uses differing levels of X-ray energies to determine the density of bones. BMD is used in the diagnosis and monitoring of osteopenia and osteoporosis. BMD scans can also provide a fracture risk percentage to patients with osteoporosis.

Please allow up to 30 minutes for your appointment.

You may be required to change into a gown and remove any metallic items that may interfere with a BMD scan. Also, if you have recently had a barium examination, contrast injection or radioisotope scan please inform your technologist as you may have to wait 10 to 14 days before having a BMD.
